Recently, Mozilla foundation started a new open source research project to define and document the health of the Internet we all love – what’s helping & hurting the world’s biggest public resource. The first prototype version of health report launched in January covering data collected on the below five key topics. These topics are considered to be critical for better health of Internet.
- Open Innovation
- Digital Inclusion
- Web Literacy &
- Privacy and Security
Open Innovation : Open means that anyone can invent or publish online without asking for permission from anyone and the technologies used to run the web are understandable and transparent.
Digital Inclusion : Everyone deserves equal opportunities to access internet and to use it to improve their lives and community.
Decentralization : Internet is controlled by many. It’s the million devices linked together in an open network. No one can own it, control it and switch it off for everyone.
Privacy & Security : In today’s world, the safety and security of internet impact all of us. We should be able to understand what is happening to our data and must have the ability to control how it is being used.
Webliteracy : It is important for everyone to have the ability to read, write and participate in digital world, so more people can move beyond consuming to creating, shaping & defending the web.
Lately, Mozilla did a survey to identify the most important area among the five. As most of Internet literates expect, the most wanted is – “Privacy & Security”. It is highly important to know what happens to our life over internet and to have control for the same. Here is the snapshot of survey responses,
Now, the question is how do we address the issue. Privacy and Security are highly depend on the choices that users make. Not everyone make the right choice. Because, there is no one right choice. Taste, opinion and attitude changes person to person and so does the choices and right & wrong’s.
However, it is important for everyone to learn the basics and be aware of what happens behind the scene to their digital footprints and data they share. With awareness, you make better choices and with better choices you get better results.
With Digital Literacy, one can earn the ability to critical think of choices they make online that can lead to better and safe results. We have seen the strong basic foundation plays a critical role in an individuals growth and use in digital world. Having the ability to evaluate the credibility of a URL can help avoid unwanted incidents online but before that it is important to be aware to check the URL.
What’s your take on this? Digital Literacy as a key for better online Privacy and Security.
We aim to build that much needed strong foundation and let people make choices on their own – it’s their right to do so. All our initiatives focus on basic foundation. Here is an example of the same:
We are looking for organizations in social space to collaborate and create an impact with Digital Literacy in the society. If you are one or know some please write to email@example.com
